On-The-Job Training at Coastland Arbor Services

On the job as a Training Arborist with Coastland Arbor Services

Having a formal qualification in arboriculture does not necessarily make a good arborist. At Coastland Arbor Services, we believe it takes many years of ’on the job’ training and working experience to become a good arborist in a commercial environment. What you learn at college and/or uni doesn’t necessarily equip you to deal with the physical demands and ability to work with and on different species of trees. This takes time and experience.

At Coastland Arbor Services we provide on-the-job training for entry-level positions in arboriculture.

As a training Arborist, you learn about tree care and the tools of the trade, which prepares you for advancement, while you earn a living. Generally you will start as a groundsman, a highly skilled, physically demanding job in itself; and it usually takes months; sometimes years in this position before you are ready to start climbing.

Training Arborists need to be become proficient in the use of chainsaws on the ground [be put through the necessary chainsaw certificates and OH&S requirements]; and the safe operation of all machinery & equipment, including chippers, stumpgrinders, and E.W.P.s.

Over the months, [in the fist year] you will become more proficient in rope work, rigging and falling techniques, and start to develop a knowledge of various tree species, [i.e. the characteristics of different hardwoods and/or softwoods - how sturdy they are, where they break, and/or how they’re going to break].

It goes without saying that this job can be dangerous. Climbing trees with a chainsaw is a a dangerous occupation. Operating machinery that can drag 12-14 inch diameter logs into an infeed shute and turn them into mulch in seconds is a dangerous activity to be involved with.

This needs to become second nature before any of our training arborists are allowed to work unsupervised, and/or move into climbing. Broken limbs, paralysis or death are never more than one bad, uneducated decision away in this business and we are not prepared to put any of our trainees into a situation where they are at risk due to lack of training or knowledge.

Climbing is a physically demanding job and for a training arborist. Climbing day in and day out for many hours a day, with a chainsaw hanging from your harness, in all conditions & weather is demanding and requires great stamina, both physically and mentally. There will be times, often daily to begin with, when you will need to push yourself and overcome fear and tiredness.

It generally takes at least two years [more often 3-4 years] of climbing in a commercial environment to become strong and fit as well as experienced enough to be considerd a versatile, well rounded climber.

Furthering Your Education

Training Programs, Certification & Other Formal Qualifications

When the time is right, job-skills training programs are readily available and we encourage all our employees to pursue further education. Specialised training is available at technical and vocational schools - and many TAFEs and universities have programs in arboriculture, horticulture, plant science, pest management, and natural resources.

The National Arborist Association of Australia (NAAA) Board have been working with the Australian Business Limited Apprenticeships Centre and and can now offer new training programs, such as Australian Apprenticeships or traineeships that can give training arborist and/or tree workers up to-date skills and a formal qualification. In most cases, a new range of Government funding is now available to you.

ISA Certification for arborists is voluntary but can be extremely helpful in getting ahead. The International Society of Arboriculture offers certification that covers all aspects of tree care. To qualify for the Certified Arborist exam, candidates need to have 3 years work experience in an arboriculture job or a degree in a related field and two years of practical experience.

An Arborist Certification Study Guide can be purchased from the ISA that helps individuals prepare for a voluntary arborist certification exam. At Coastland Arbor Services, when we believe they our training arborists have developed the necessary practical skills and on-the-job experience, we encourage pursuing this additional qualification.
